Comprehensive Standards: Educational Programs # 3.5.2 (residence requirement)
The institution awards degrees only to those students who have earned at least 25 percent of the credit hours required for the degree through instruction offered by that institution.

Compliance
North Carolina State University is in compliance with this standard.

Explanation
To be eligible for a baccalaureate degree, the university's Residence for Matriculation and Graduation Policy requires that students earn 25% of required credit hours and at least 30 of their last 45 hours of credit through NC State University courses.  Individual departments and/or colleges may have additional residence requirements for graduation.  Approval for any additional requirements is granted through the provost's office.

The residence policy is available to faculty, staff, and students through the university's Handbook for Teaching and Advising and the Undergraduate Catalog.

The university ensures compliance with this requirement in the following manner.  Registration and Records maintains an Automated Degree Audit System, which monitors a student's completion of degree requirements as he or she progresses through the university.  When the student nears completion of his or her program, that student's academic record is reviewed by the faculty adviser, department, and college dean's office before the student is cleared for graduation.  The Automated Degree Audit System is also used during the graduation clearance process.

The residence requirement policy applies equally to on-campus and distance education students.

Supplementary Information
University policy governing credit requirements for graduate programs is presented in Comprehensive Standards: Educational Programs #19.
